Introducing: new Ligature Management Course

Across residential care, schools, supported living environments and custodial settings, safeguarding responsibilities are under constant scrutiny. Policies are important, but when a ligature incident occurs, it is the immediate response of trained staff that makes the difference.

At BR Specialists, we are introducing a new Ligature Management course, designed to move beyond awareness and into practical, scenario-based capability. To support organisations planning ahead for 2026 compliance and safeguarding reviews, we are offering a special introductory rate for the first five organisations that confirm bookings for February.

For your assurance all courses are delivered by The National Federation for Personal Safety (NFPS) members.

Why Ligature Management Matters

Ligature risks are often hidden in plain sight. Door handles, radiator pipes, wardrobe rails, bed frames, exposed pipework and even clothing rails can become anchor points.

In environments where individuals may be vulnerable, distressed or in crisis, environmental awareness is not optional. It is part of an organisation’s duty of care.

Effective ligature management is about:

  • Identifying potential anchor points before incidents occur

  • Understanding behavioural and environmental risk factors

  • Acting quickly and calmly in an emergency

  • Preserving evidence appropriately

  • Providing immediate post-incident support

This is particularly relevant in:

  • Residential care and supported living

  • SEN and specialist schools

  • Mental health services

  • Prisons and custodial environments

  • Secure units and emergency accommodation

Beyond Awareness: A Practical Course

Many staff have completed online safeguarding modules. Fewer have physically practised removing a ligature safely under pressure.

This course is built around real-world application.

Participants are put into small groups and work through structured scenarios using different materials to simulate realistic situations. The focus is on competence, communication and calm execution.

Training includes:

  • Recognising ligature points and conducting environmental audits

  • Safe and effective use of ligature cutters

  • Emergency response techniques, including controlled removal

  • Coordinated team response in simulated incidents

  • Documentation and evidence preservation

  • Immediate support and aftercare considerations

Rather than passive learning, delegates practise the skills they may one day need to use.

Legal and Ethical Responsibilities

Ligature incidents carry not only emotional impact but also significant governance implications.

The course covers:

  • Duty of care obligations

  • Incident documentation standards

  • Preserving evidence where appropriate

  • Working within safeguarding frameworks

  • Reflective practice following incidents

This ensures organisations are not only operationally prepared, but procedurally sound.

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for:

  • Nurses and healthcare assistants

  • Social workers and support staff

  • Mental health practitioners

  • Residential care teams

  • School safeguarding leads

  • Custodial and security staff

It is particularly valuable for teams working in higher-risk environments or supporting individuals with complex behavioural needs.

A Word from Nick Attard

Nick Attard, General Manager at BR Specialists, explains:

“Ligature management is one of those areas where confidence comes from practice. Staff need to understand the environment, but they also need to rehearse their response. Calm, coordinated action can save a life. That’s why this course is built around realistic scenarios, not just slides and theory.”

February Introductory Rate

To mark the launch of this new course, we are offering a special introductory rate for the first five organisations that confirm a booking for February.

This is designed to support teams who are reviewing safeguarding arrangements and preparing for the year ahead.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first confirmed basis.

Plan Ahead with Confidence

Ligature management is not about alarm. It is about preparation.

If your organisation would benefit from practical, scenario-based training that builds real confidence and capability, get in touch with the team at BR Specialists to discuss availability and secure your February booking.
